I announce the start of this great venture west then there’s radio silence from my end for a few days, but for good reason.
We’ve been spending the last few days getting in quality time with family.
We drove from Charleston to Easley, SC, to stay with Jason’s parents for a couple of days, hitting some of our favorite spots in Greenville while we were there. But the best part of our visit was morning coffee-and-chat sessions on the back porch in our pj’s that lasted into the afternoon.
Jason’s brother- and sister-in-law and our two nephews drove up from Atlanta to see us off and we loved every minute of their overnight stay. We took loads of family pics over the two days, but I’m selfishly hoarding those.
The Chuck Wagon got a bit of a late start getting out of SC to make it to Dayton, OH, so we pushed 8 hours through Asheville, up through Tennessee and Kentucky and into Ohio, to spend the next morning and afternoon visiting more family.
And around 3pm EST this afternoon we made a hard left out of Ohio toward Iowa. We covered a lot more ground today – Indiana, Illinois and into Iowa – about 8 hours of driving in all. We watched the landscape go from industrial and harsh to miles and miles of cornfields and soybean fields dotted with little farmhouses and pretty little pinwheels off in the distance that harness wind energy (I think they’re technically called wind turbines, but I prefer little pinwheels).
There’s not been much stopping to smell the …corn?… so far, so the best I have are shots from the car. That will change tomorrow, though. We’ve just arrived in Iowa City for the night and are looking forward to exploring this little town in the morning before heading to Nebraska.
